The Leaning Tower of Pisa: A Curious Destination

Asking who has not heard about the Tower of Pisa is a crucial question.  However, there is another more fundamental question: Who would not like to go to stay in direct contact with it? Everybody would and for that, there must be strong reasons.  Let’s take a look at them.  The official name of the tower in Italian is Torre Pendente di Pisa (The Leaning Tower of Pisa in English).  This Tower constitutes the Cathedral’s bell tower.  The facts that its construction began 833 years ago and that it lasted around 200 years are, without a doubt, impressive.  In the same way, it is curious that the architect responsible of creating such an important attraction in Italy is still not determined.

Perhaps, the most attention-grabbing trait about this tower is that it was originally designed to stay straight.  Nevertheless, when the construction started in 1173, it got leaning.  It is estimated that its leaning is of 10%.  This tower is 55 meters high and encompasses 294 steps.  It is a cylindrically-shaped structure that, above the ground floor, comprises six floors of great aerial open galleries.  One of the characteristics tourists love the most about this tower is that, from the very top of the campanile, they find the opportunity of having an ample and incomparable view.  Regardless of the direction you are willing to focus on, you will always find other stunning attractions.

As other interesting facts about The Leaning Tower of Pisa, the reason why the whole structure is leaning is that the building sank in the ground. In spite of the fact that Mussolini ordered to pour cement to solve the inclination, it worsened its condition.  In addition, during the World War II, the United States destroyed all the towers with similar heights since they could help snipers.  Nevertheless, a retreat order prevented the tower to be destroyed.  Thus, if you like curiosities, history, great architecture and sculpture, you should never miss coming to The Leaning Tower of Pisa under any circumstances.
