Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Vittorio Veneto is a city situated in Italy, in the region of Veneto, north-east of the Italian peninsula. In October 1918, it was the site of the last battle between Italy and Austria-Hungary during World War I, leading to the victory of Italy in the war and to the armistice with the defeated Austro-Hungarian Empire on the 4th of November. Prior to the unification of Italy in 1860, it was formed by Serravalle, the northern part, and Ceneda in the south. Vittorio Veneto belongs to the province of Treviso and is 42 kilometers far from Treviso, which is the chief town of the homonymous province.
