Treviso
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Treviso is a town in the Veneto region of Italy. It is the capital of Treviso province. This municipality had 82,112 inhabitants as per December 2004 and some 80,000 live in the urban center proper, while the city hinterland has a population of about170, 000. It is the home of the headquarters of designer clothing company Benetton. The city is situated some 15 kilometers south-west to the right bank of the Piave River, on the plain between the Gulf of Venice and the Alps, at the confluence of the Sile with the Botteniga. Tarvisium, then a Veneti city, became a municipium when the Romans added Cisalpine Gaul to their dominions. The city laid in closeness of the Via Postumia, which connected Opitergium to Aquileia that were the two main Roman centres of Veneto in ancient and Early Middle Ages times. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Treviso is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
