Treviglio




Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.
 
Treviglio is a town in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy, Italy. It lies south of the capital city, in the lower territory marked by the Adda and the Serio rivers. Its population as of December 31, 2003 was 27,162 where as its density is 830 per square kilometer. Treviglio was created in the High Middle Ages unifying two pre-existing settlements that were Cusarola, Pisignano and Portoli. From 1225 Treviglio was a free commune whose statutes, dating from 1392, and are at present housed in the City's Museum. The government was held by 60 consuls, twenty for each of the originary ethnic groups, who remained in charge for six months.
 
Today the city is the second most significant city of the province of Bergamo. Agriculture and trade were prominent in the economy of Treviglio well into the 20th century, with flourishing craftmanship producing silk and furniture. Their industry is now developed in the electrics, mechanics and chemical sectors. In recent years, a shopping center and a multiplex theatre have also been built. On May 29, 1995, stage sixteen of the Giro d'Italia concluded at Treviglio where the stage was won by Giuseppe Citterio.
 
A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Treviglio is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
