Trento
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Trento, sometimes called Trent in English, is an Italian city located in the Adige river valley in the Trentino-South Tyrol region. It is the capital of the region and of the autonomous province of Trento. The total area of the city is 157 square kilometers. The population of the city in 2005 was 110,142 and the density of population in the city is 702 per square kilometer. The township of Trento is geographically very large and encompasses the town center as well as many suburbs of extremely varied geographical and population conditions. Various distinctive suburbs still maintain their traditional identity of rural or mountain villages. The town proper only has 55,197 inhabitants. The 2004 population of the entire township is 110,142. Trento lies in a wide glacial valley, where the Fersina and Avisio rivers join the Adige. Trento is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
