Trapani

Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular
geographical nature, la Penisola and the Peninsula.

Trapani is a city on the west coast of Sicily in Italy. It is the capital of the Province of Trapani. Originally founded by ancient Greeks, the city is still an important fishing port and the main gateway to the nearby Egadi Islands. The total area of the city is 271 square kilometers. The population of the city as of December 31, 2004 was 70,735 and the density of population of the city is 249 per square kilometer.

Trapani was founded by the Elymians to serve as the port of the nearby city of Erice, which overlooks it from Monte San Giuliano. It was originally named Drepanon from the Greek word for sickle, because of the curving shape of its harbor. Carthage seized control of the city in 260 BC and subsequently making it an important naval base, but ceded it to Rome in 241 BC following the Battle of the Aegates in the First Punic War.

The city is renowned for its Easter procession, Misteri, when the town's guilds parade a groups of sculpted 17th century and 18th century religious statues through the streets in a procession.

Trapani is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
