Spoleto

Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.

Spoleto is an ancient city in the Italian province of Perugia in east central Umbria on the foothills of the Apennines. It is 20 kilometers South of Trevi, 29 kilometers North of Terni and 63 kilometers South East of Perugia. Its population according to the 2003 census was 38,000. Spoleto is situated on the eastern branch of the Via Flaminia, which forked into two roads at Narnia and rejoined at Forum Flaminii, close to Foligno. An ancient road also ran hence to Nursia.

Spoleto has occupied a strategic geographical position. This city suffered greatly during the civil wars of Marius and Sulla and from that time onwards it was a municipium. The Festival dei Due Mondi that means Festival of the Two Worlds was founded in 1958. Since Spoleto was a small town, where real estate and other goods and services were at the time comparatively inexpensive, and also because there are two indoor theatres, a Roman theatre and many other spaces, it was chosen by Gian-Carlo Menotti as the venue for an arts festival.

A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Spoleto is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
