Rovigo
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Rovigo is a municipality in the Veneto region of Northern Italy, the capital of the homonymous province. Rovigo stands on the low ground between the lower courses of the rivers Adige and Po, 80 kilometers by rail south west of Venice and 40 kilometers south west of Padua, and on the Adigetto Canal. The low ground between the lower Po and the lower Adige and the sea is known as Polesine, a name the derivation of which is much discussed, usually applied only to the province of Rovigo, but is sometimes extended to the neighborhood of Adria and Ferrara. Rovigo appears to be mentioned in a document from Ravenna dating from 838. In 1194 Rovigo became a possession of Azzo VI d'Este, duke of Ferrara, who took the title of count of Rovigo. The Este authority ended in 1482, when the Venetians took the place by siege and retained possession of it by the peace of 1484. The architecture of the town bears the stamp both of Venetian and of Ferrarese influence. The main sights include that ruins of the Castle 10th century, of which two towers remain and the church of Madonna del Soccorso, best known as La Rotonda. It was built between 1594 and 1606 by Francesco Zamberlan of Bassano, a pupil of Palladio, to house an amazing image of a sitting Madonna with Child carrying a rose. The Town hall, which contains a library including some exceptional early editions, belonging to the Accademia de Concordi, founded in 1580, and a fair picture gallery enriched with the spoils of the monasteries. Rovigo is an attractive city with natural beauty and historical places, while traveling in Italy.
