Reggio di Calabria

Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.

Inhabitants of Italy are referred to as Italians. Their official language is Standard Italian, descendant of Tuscan dialect and a direct descendant of Latin. The word Italy is derived from the Homeric Aeolic word which means bull. Italy is subject to highly diverse weather conditions in autumn, winter, and spring. The country has the fifth-highest population density in Europe at 193 persons per square kilometer. Reggio di Calabria is the biggest and the oldest city in Calabria, Italy. It has around 200,000 inhabitants, but the population of the urban area is more. It is located on the toe of Italy, across from the island of Sicily. Founded as Rhegion by Greek settlers in the 8th century, Reggio di Calabria was destroyed by many earthquakes and a tsunami. During the Roman Empire, it was known as Rhegium Julium, a noble Roman city. Later on it became a Byzantine city, and in the 12th century, it became part of the Kingdom of Sicily. In the 13th century, it became part of the Kingdom of Naples. It is known as the location of the first Hebrew book, Rashi commentary on the Pentateuch, printed in 1475. Some scholars consider Rome as the city where Hebrew printing began.
