Piombino
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Piombino is a town in the province of Livorno in Italy. It is on the medium coast of Tyrrhenian Sea, in front of Elba Island and at the northern side of Maremma. It has a prehistorical center, which was derived from the Etruscans' port, in the surroundings of Populonia. In the middle Ages, it was an important port of Pisa's Republic. Its surroundings host a substantial industrial area. Its port is heavily used for industry and tourism, with ferry-boats to Portoferraio and Olbia. The area of modern Piombino was settled since ancient times. During the Etruscan period, the city in the area was Populonia within the commune of Piombino. The name Piombino derives from Populino, which means Small Populonia. The refugees gave it to the region where they had taken refuge after the city was attacked by Greek pirates in the 9th century. In 1022, the Monastery of San Giustiniano was started in the area and boosted the activity of fishers, sailors and workers. In 1115, Piombino submitted to the Republic of Pisa and became its second main port. The authority was exerted by a Captain during the conflicts between the Pisane and the Genoese between 12th and 13th centuries. The city was sacked several times and in 1248, Captain Ugolino Arsopachi built the Channels. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Piombino is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
