Pinerolo




Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Their official language is Standard Italian, descendant of Tuscan dialect and a direct descendant of Latin.
 
Pinerolo, an Italian town is at the elevation of 376 meters from the mean sea level and has an area of 50 squared kilometers. Its total population as of December 31, 2004 is 34,264 inhabitants with a density of 665 people per squared kilometer. In the middle ages, it was one of the prominent areas of Italy and one of the principal fortresses of the dukes of Savoy. The famous fortress of Fenestrelle is very nearby to Pinerolo. The original mention of Pinerolo is in the tenth century when it belonged to the Marca di Torino. It was ruled by the abbot nullius of Pinerolo after the city established itself as a commune in 1200.
 
From 1235, Amadeus IV of Savoy ruled Pinerolo, which in 1243 became absolute and was exercised thereafter by the house of Savoy. When the French invaded Piedmont in 1536, Pinerolo fell under their dominance and remained in possession till 1574. By the treaty of Cherasco, it again fell to France in 1630 and remained under French control. It was till the restoration by the treaty of Turin to Savoy, which, at the same time withdrew from the league against Louis XIV.
 
Pinerolo is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
