Pietrasanta




Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Inhabitants of Italy are referred to as Italians.
 
Pietrasanta is a town on the coast of northern Tuscany in Italy, in the province of Lucca. It is located 3 km from the coast. It straddles the last foothills of the Apuan Alps and is 45 kilometers on north of Pisa and 1.5 hours from Florence and Genoa. Its elevation is 14 meters from the mean sea level and its area is 41 squared kilometers. Its population as of December 31, 2004 was recorded to be 25,547 inhabitants with a population density of 588 squared kilometers. Pietrasanta has Roman origins and a part of the Roman wall still exists over there. It was founded in 1255 upon the preexisting Rocca di Sala fortress of the Lombards by Luca Guiscardo da Pietrasanta, from whom it got its name.
 
Pietrasanta was at its peak as a part of the Genova city from 1316 to 1328. The city was first mentioned in 1331 in the records of Genova, when it became a part of the Luccan state with the river port of Motrone till 1430. The chief attractions of Pietrasanta include the Cathedral of St. Martin, Church of Sain Augustine, Gothic Civic Tower, Column and Fountain of the Marzocco, Palazzo Panichi Carli and Palazzo Moroni, which is the home to local Archaeological Museum.
 
Pietrasanta is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
