Piazza Armerina

Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Inhabitants of Italy are referred to as Italians. Their official language is Standard Italian, descendant of Tuscan dialect and a direct descendant of Latin.

Piazza Armerina is an Italian town in the province of Enna of the self governing island of Sicily. Piazza, as it was called prior to 1862 began during the domination of Normans in Sicily in the 11th century, though the area was occupied ever since the prehistorical period. It was flourishing during Roman times, as demonstrated by the instances of the patrician Villa Romana del Casale. It is the seat of the well known Palio dei Normanni, a re-enactment in costume of the entrance of Count Roger I in the city. It is one of the Lombardic communities of Sicily, as its dialect differes from the adjoining regions.

It was due to the ruin of the old Piazza by King William I of Sicily and the repopulation by William II as per other scholars, to the later age of Frederick II. It happened when colonists came from Lombard regions of northern Italy to Monferrato and Piacenza. The main sights of Piazza Armerina are the Church of Fundro and the massive Aragonese Castle. It is square shaped with square towers, Baroque church of St. Roch has a carved tufa portal and the Palazzo di Citta, has a fresco ceiling.

The Hermitage of St. Andrew and church of Santa Maria Del Gesu of 16th century are presently abandoned. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Piazza Armerina is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
