Pesaro
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Pesaro is a town and comune in the Italian region of the Marche, capital of the Pesaro Urbino province, on the Adriatic. According to the 2003 census, its population was 91,400. Its total area is of 126 square kilometers and elevation 11 meters. Fishery, furniture industry and tourism are main points in local economy. The town is twinned with Watford in England. The city was founded as Pisaurum by the Romans in 184 BC, before Christ as colony in the territory of the Piceni, the people who lived in the Marche during the Iron Age. A settlement of the latter tribe, one of their most ancient, has been found at Novilara. Pesaro hosts the home games of Victoria Libertas basketball team, better known across Europe as Scavolini Pesaro. Pesaro has many tourist attraction places such as Porta del Ponte, Porta Rimini, the Town Museum houses the splendid Pesaro Altarpiece by Giambellino. The Oliveriani Museum is home to several interesting archaeological findings. Pesaro is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
