Palermo
Italy, officially the Italian Republic is a Southern European country. It comprises the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot, or due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Italy is called, Il Belpaese, Italian for beautiful country by its inhabitants, due to the beauty and variety of its landscapes and for having the world's largest artistic patrimony; the country is home to the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Rome is its Capital city and incidentally its largest city as well.
Palermo is the principal city and administrative seat of the autonomous region of Sicily, an autonomous region of Italy and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Italy, as well as the capital of the Province of Palermo. Inhabitants of Palermo in Italian are referred to as Palermitani or poetically Panormiti. It is situated a height of merely a meter and has a population of 675,501, as of 2006, within an area of 158 square kilometers and has a population density of 4,275 inhabitants per square kilometer. Palermo was founded in the 8th century BC by Phoenician tradesmen around a natural harbour on the north-western coast of Sicily. Palermo is a city with monumental problems, but is also a city of almost three millennia of history, beautiful palaces and churches, colourful markets, marvelous food and a distinctive cultural identity. Palermo has a noteworthy architectural heritage such as The Cathedral of Palermo, San Giovanni degli Eremiti, Martorana', Santa Maria dell'Ammiragliato, San Cataldo, Santa Maria della Gangia, the Palazzo dei Normanni, an example of Norman architecture and The Museo Archeologico Regionale is one the main museums of Italy: it includes numerous remains from Etruscan, Carthaginian, Roman and Hellenistic civilizations. As it is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of Italy, it is one of the most visited places amongst the most die-hard travelers the world over.
