Ortona
Italy, officially the Italian Republic is a Southern European country. It comprises the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot, or due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Italy is called, Il Belpaese, Italian for beautiful country by its inhabitants, due to the beauty and variety of its landscapes and for having the world's largest artistic patrimony; the country is home to the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Rome is its Capital city and incidentally its largest city as well.
Ortona is a coastal town and municipality of the Province of Chieti in the Italian region of Abruzzo a region of central Italy bordering Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and south-west, Molise to the south-east and the Adriatic Sea to the east. It is situated at a height of 72 meters above sea level having a population of 23,500 within an area of 70 square kilometers and has a population density of 311 inhabitants per square kilometer. In 2005, during works near the Castle, a Bronze Age settlement was discovered, and the Roman town largely coincided with the Frentani, an Italic population. Some sections of paved roads and urban walls, as well as some archaeological findings are the only remnains of this period. After the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860, Ortona became one of the first sea resorts on the Adriatic Sea. The main attractions of Ortona include the many beautiful beaches, historical museums based on the World War II battle of Ortona. A close drive to the parco nazionale di abruzzo. The composer Sir Francesco Paolo Tosti was born in Ortona, as were the Cascella family of artists. As it is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of Italy, it is one of the most visited places amongst the most die-hard travelers the world over.
