Olbia




Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.
 
Olbia is a town of approximately 40,000 inhabitants in northeastern Sardinia, Italy, in the Gallura sub-region. It is located in the province of Olbia, Tempio. Its area is 376.10 per square kilometer, population is 49.534 and density is 192.25 per square kilometer.
 
Olbia is very ancient and was probably founded by the Greeks, according to a local legend. It contains ruins from prehistoric times to the Roman Era, when it was a significant port, and the middle ages, when it was the capital of the Giudicato of Gallura, one of the four independent states of Sardinia.
 
It is the economic centre of this part of the island concentrating around commercial centers and food industry and is very close to the famous Costa Smeralda tourist area. It is an administrative capital together with Tempio Pausania of the province of Olbia-Tempio, functioning since 2005.  Olbia is the main connection between Sardinia and the Italian peninsula, with an airport, a passenger port , and a railway to Porto Torres and Cagliari. There are an expressway to Nuoro and Cagliari and national roads to Sassari, Palau and Tempio Pausania.
 
A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Olbia is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
