As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 22,561, an area of 5.8 square kilometers and a density of 3,883 per square kilometers. Nova Milanese borders the municipalities that include Cinisello Balsamo, Muggio, Desio, Paderno Dugnano and Varedo. Nova is located in the part of Lombardy with the heaviest traffic and fastest industrialization, only 6 kilometers from Monza and 15 kilometers from the main town of the province. These factors that are ease of transport and fertility of the soil were aided extraordinarily by the construction of the Villoresi canal, inaugurated in 1881 after the death of the man who ideated it. At present the economic-productive structure is characterized mostly from small and average artisan companies.
