Noto
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Noto is a city in Sicily, Italy, in the Province of Syracuse, 32 kilometers southwest of the city of Syracuse situated at the feet of the Iblei Mountains. The city gives its name to the surrounding valley, Val di Noto. In 2002 Noto and its church were declared a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO World Heritage member. The older town, Noto Antica, lies 8 kilometers directly north on Mount Alveria. Its population is 23,346 and its density is 42 per square kilometers. In 1844 Noto was named a bishopric seat, although in 1866 suffered the ending of the religious guilds, which were intensely linked to the city's structures and buildings. Noto is famous for its fine buildings of the early 18th century and is considered among the main masterpieces in the Sicilian baroque style. Palaces and other buildings include Ducezio Palace, the current Town Hall. Designed by Vincenzo Sinagra, it houses neo-classical style frescoes by Antonio Mazza. They also include Astuto Palace and Monastery of Santa Chiara. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Noto is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
