Nocera Inferiore

Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.

Nocera Inferiore, formerly Nocera dei Pagani, is one of Italy’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments. It is a town in the Campania region of the Salerno province. It is located at the foot of Monte Albino some 20 kilometers to the eastern south-east direction of Naples by rail and 135 feet above the sea-level.

According to precious archeological findings, it can be affirmed Nocera Inferiore was first populated even before the Roman era. Before the Roman supremacy in southern Italy, Nuceria was the chief town in the valley of the Sarnus, Herculaneum, Pompeii, Stabiae and Surrentum all being dependent upon it. The coins of the town bear the head of the river god. It sustained its adherence to Rome till 309 BC when it joined the revolted Samnites. In 308 BC, it repulsed a Roman effort to land at the mouth of the Sarnus, but in 307 BC, it was inundated and surrendered.

The town centre has buildings in a wide range of styles that include neoclassical, modernist, noucentrista and simply eclectic. Nocera was also the birthplace of famous painter Francesco Solimena and of Hugo de' Pagani, the founder of the Templars, the footballer Simone Barone.

Nocera Inferiore, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
