Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.
Nardo is one of Italy’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments that the town has embraced. It is a small town, commune and Episcopal located in the southern Italian region of Apulia, in the province of Lecce. It is also the Roman Catholic Diocese in southern Italy. According to precious archeological findings, it can be affirmed that this area was first populated by the Greek monks who were fleeing from the persecutions of the Iconoclasts. Pope Paul II assigned to these Greek monks the Episcopal palace and the revenues and the city was made part of the Diocese of Brindisi. Thus the monastery became a centre of Greek culture.
