Monza




Monza is one of Italy’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments. It is a city on the river Lambro in the Lombardy region of Italy some 15 kilometers to the northeast of Milan. Since June 11, 2004 Monza has officially been the capital of the new province of Monza and Brianza.
 
Monza is the third biggest city of Lombardy and one of the important industrial, economic and administrative centers of the Brianza area. It possesses textile industries and a publishing trade. It is best known for its Grand Prix motor racing circuit. The industrial development in this municipality has been a determining factor for its economic growth and population and although the industry is losing force in the last decades, the might of the sector services continues attracting new inhabitants in the city.
 
Monza is famous for its Romanesque-Gothic Duomo of Saint John. In the course of its history Monza withstood thirty-two sieges, but the Porta d'Agrate is all that remains of its original walls and fortifications. The fine black and white marble arcaded facade was raised in the mid 14th century by Matteo da Campione. The campanile was erected in 1606 to designs by Pellegrino Tibaldi. In the frescoed Chapel of Theodelinda is the iron crown of Lombardy, supposed to contain one of the nails used at the Crucifixion. The treasury also contains the crown, fan and gold comb, Gothic crosses and reliquaries, a golden hen and seven chickens that represent Lombardy and her seven provinces.
 
The historical centers at Monza are the hypotheses to decipher that also contains the church of Santa Maria in Istrada, with a rich terra-cotta facade of 1393, and the Broletto or Arengario, the 14th century palace of the civic commune, that was built on an arcade of pointed arches, with a tall square tower terminating in a sharp central cone.
 
Monza, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
