Montecchio Maggiore
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Montecchio Maggiore is one of Italy’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments that the town has embraced. It is a town in the province of Vicenza, Veneto. It is located in the plains of the Veneto region, in an area bordered to the west by the Lessini Mountains and to the south-east by the Berici Hills.
According to precious archeological findings, it can be affirmed that this area was first populated during the Roman era. In spite of the intense urbanization that is undergoing in Montecchio Maggiore, the town with its pre historic origins is rich in art and architectural treasures of great interest. These monuments include the Cordellina-Lombardi Villa, built in 1735 in Palladian style and decorated with frescoes by Gian Battista Tiepolo and with sculptures from the Paduan workshop of the Bonazza family. The Castles of Romeo and Juliet, from the Scagliera epoch, constructed on top of pre-existent, probably Roman fortifications and numerous other places add to the list of historical memorials.
Presently, intense urbanization at Montecchio Maggiore has resulted in a large number of good quality hotels which offer the possibility of staying in the central part of the town, close to the main highways. There are also a great number of town festivals which take place throughout the year.
The industrial development in Montecchio Maggiore has been a determining factor for its economic growth and population and although the industry is losing force in the last decades, the might of the sector services continues attracting new inhabitants in the city. Today, it has grown as the preeminent, historical and potential tourism destination that enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers to become one of the most visited places.
