Monfalcone
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Monfalcone is one of Italy’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments that the town has embraced. It is a commune of the province of Gorizia, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, located on the coast of the Gulf of Trieste. It rises seven meters above the sea level. As of 2004, the population of Monfalcone was 27,668 inhabitants. It has a total surface area of 205 square kilometers thus showing a population density of 1.287 inhabitants per square kilometer. The town centre has buildings in a wide range of styles that include neoclassical, modernist, noucentrist and simply eclectic. Monfalcone is also the home of Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani. The industrial development Monfalcone municipality has been a determining factor for its economic growth and population and although the industry is losing force in the last decades, the might of the sector services continues attracting new inhabitants in the city. Presently, the city experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of Italy.
