Lecco

Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Inhabitants of Italy are referred to as Italians. Their official language is Standard Italian, descendant of Tuscan dialect and a direct descendant of Latin. The word Italy is derived from the Homeric Aeolic word which means bull. Today, despite regional variations in the form of accents and vowel emphasis, Italian is fully comprehensible to most throughout the country.

Lecco is an Italian city set in Lombardy 50 kilometres north of Milan; it lies at the end of the south-eastern branch of Lake Como. The prealps rise to the north and east. Lecco is the capital of the province of Lecco. The lake narrows to form the river Adda, so bridges were built to improve road communications with Como and Milan. There are three bridges crossing the river Adda in Lecco, they are the Azzone Visconti Bridge in 1336-1338, the Kennedy Bridge in 1956 and the Alessandro Manzoni Bridge in 1985. On January 1, 2001, Lecco had 45,827 inhabitants. Its economy used to be based on industry, iron manufacturers, but now it is mainly tertiary. Lecco is situated at 214 metres above sea level. It covers an area of 45 square kilometre with total population of 46,477 as on December 2004. Lecco has a density of 1,011 per square kilometre.

Presently, Lecco experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of Italy. Lecco, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place.
