Latina
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.
Latina is one of Italy’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments that the city has embraced. It is the capital of the province of Latina in the region Latium. Presently, Latina has a population of about 110,000 inhabitants and is thus the second largest city of the region. The municipality borders on Aprilia, Cisterna di Latina, Nettuno, Pontinia, Sabaudia, Sermoneta and Sezze.
Latina was founded in 1932 under the name Littoria when the area surrounding it, which had been a mired since Antiquity, was drained. Initially, Littoria was populated with immigrants coming mainly from Friuli and Veneto, who formed the so-called Venetian Pontine community. The edifices and the memorials, chiefly in neo-classical style, were designed by well-known architects and artists such as Marcello Piacentini, Angiolo Mazzoni and Duilio Cambellotti.
After 1934, the city became a province capital and after the Second World War, it was renamed as Latina in 1946. With the arrival of other people mainly from Latium itself, the original Venetian like dialect was increasingly substituted by a form of Romanesco dialect.
Presently, Latina experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of Italy. This fact has consolidated along with other adjacent municipalities, as a great alternative for residence.
