Lamezia Terme




Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.

Lamezia Terme is one of Italy’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments that the city has embraced. It is a city and a commune in the province of Catanzaro. Lamezia is located almost 35 kilometers away from Catanzaro, 70 kilometers from Cosenza and 135 kilometers from Reggio Calabria. The city is a site on the eastern border of the coastal plain commonly known as Piana di Sant'Eufemia, in the middle of the Calabrian coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea that was created by drying a wide marshy area.

The commune of Lamezia Terme was formally created on January 4, 1968. Its territory includes those of the former communes of Nicastro, Sambiase, and Sant’Eufemia Lamezia. The divisive union was intended to create a stronger entity capable of a more influential economical development that was considered on of the areas of utmost economical expansion in the late 1960s.

In spite of the intense urbanization that is undergoing in Lamezia Terme, the city with its pre historic origins is rich in art and memorials. The memorials include the Castle in the summit of a hill 320 meters high which was built by the Bruttii or by Greeks colonists. The Bastion of the Knights of Malta which is another memorial is a massive, well conserved watchtower that was built in 1550 by the Spanish viceroy of Naples Pedro de Toledo. The Diocesan Museum houses an Arab Norman ivory case of 12th century and paintings of 17th to 18th centuries also add to the list of memorials.

Located centrally, Lamezia Terme it the main transportation hub of the region. The railway station, on the main line leading from Reggio to Naples, is a major terminal for goods traffic. It is also the site of the international airport, built in 1976. The airport has both national and international connections. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and pursue enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace.
