Fossano

Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.

Fossano is a town and community of Piedmont, Italy, in the province of Cuneo. It lies on the main railway line from Turin to Cuneo, and has a branch line to Mondovi as well. Major industries of the town include metallurgy, chemicals and textiles. Fossano appeared as a district in 1237, but in 1251 had to yield to Asti. It eventually surrendered in 1314 to Fillippo d'Acaia, whose successor handed it over to the house of Savoy. Its population was 24,198 as of December 31, 2004.

It has an impressive castle with four towers, begun by Filippo d'Acaia in 1314. The cathedral was reconstructed at the end of the 18th century. The place began to get hold of some significance in the 13th century. The town's hospital and the Trinity Church were designed by Francesco Gallo in the 18th century. There are also mineral baths and a center for cattle-breeding and agriculture.

A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Fossano is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
