Eboli

Italy, officially the Italian Republic is a Southern European country. It comprises the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot, or due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Italy is called, Il Belpaese, Italian for beautiful country by its inhabitants, due to the beauty and variety of its landscapes and for having the world's largest artistic patrimony; the country is home to the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Rome is its Capital city and incidentally its largest city as well.

Eboli is a town of Campania, a region of Southern Italy, bordering on Lazio to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east, Basilicata to the east, and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, Italy, in the province of Salerno, on the south edge of the hills overlooking the valley of the Sele. It is situated at an altitude of 145 meters populated by 36,879 inhabitants within an area of 138.7 square kilometers, as of 2004, and has a population density of 262 inhabitants per square kilometer.

As an agricultural centre, Eboli is known mainly for olive oil and dairy products. The ancient Eburum was a Lucanian city, mentioned only by Pliny the Elder and in inscriptions, not far distant from the Campanian border. It lay above the Via Popilia, which followed the line taken by the modern railway.

Scanty remains of the ancient polygonal walls may still be seen. The sacristy of St. Francis contains two 14th century pictures, one by Roberto da Oderisio of Naples. A local saying, Cristo si e fermato a Eboli, Christ stopped at Eboli, was used by 20th century writer Carlo Levi as the title of a book, referring to the poverty in the south of Italy at the beginning of the 20th century.

As it is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of Italy, it is one of the most visited places amongst the most die-hard travelers the world over.
