Conversano

Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.

Inhabitants of Italy are referred to as Italians. Their official language is Standard Italian, descendant of Tuscan dialect and a direct descendant of Latin. The word Italy is derived from the Homeric Aeolic word which means bull. Italy is subject to highly diverse weather conditions in autumn, winter, and spring. The country has the fifth-highest population density in Europe at 193 persons per square kilometer. Today, despite regional variations in the form of accents and vowel emphasis, Italian is fully comprehensible to most throughout the country.

Conversano is an ancient town and community of Bari province in the Italian region of Puglia. It is located 30 kilometers southeast of Bari, 7 kilometers from the Adriatic coast, at 219 meters above sea-level. Conversano breeds black horses with Arab blood, strong ram-like heads, short backs, broad hocks that are in turn used to breed Lipizzaner horses.

In 2004, the population of the city was 24,425 and area 126 square kilometers. Its main monument is the medieval Castle dating from the period of Norman-Hohenstaufen rule in the Kingdom of Sicily. The Romanesque cathedral is the see of the bishop of the diocese of Conversano-Monopoli. The other landmarks include the Baroque church, Cosma e Damiano and Monastery of St. Benedict. In the neighborhood of the city are the Castle of Marchione and the ruins of Castiglione.

A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Conversano is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
