Cesena
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Cesena is a city in the Romagna region of northern Italy. It is situated on the southern corner of Ravenna and western corner of Rimini. It is at the foot of the Apennines and around 15 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea. It was originally an Umbrian or Etruscan town. After a short period under Gaulish rule, it was taken by the Romans in the 3rd century. It was a garrison town of strategic importance that was ruined in the wars amongst Marius and Sulla. The wines of Cesena are among the best all over the world. Cesena was presented to the Papacy by its Frankish conqueror in 754 and passed back and forth between the popes and the archbishops of Ravenna. It was temporarily a communal republic from 1183 to 1198 and was long contested between popes and Holy Roman Emperors. A fief sometimes held by the Malatesta was directed by the papacy with resistance. The rule by the Forlivese Ordelaffi was destroyed in 1357 by the Papal troop that was led by Cardinal Gil de Albornoz. The defense of Cesena by Cia degli Ordelaffi, who was the wife of Lord Forli against Papal troops, was unsuccessful. At the time of World War II, Cesena was near the Gothic Line that passed on the Appennini near the city and suffered bombings. In 1992, it was elevated to the rank of co-capital of province with Forli. Cesena is a city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, luxurious hotels and cottages. It is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
