Castelvetrano
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Castelvetrano is a town in the province of Trapani, Sicily, Italy. The archeological site of Selinunte is located within the territory of the commune. Castelvetrano is 111 kilometers. distant from Agrigento, 181 kilometers from Caltanissetta, 303 kilometers from Catania, 222 kilometers from Enna, 355 kilometers from Messina, 96 kilometers from Palermo, 247 kilometers from Ragusa, 328 kilometers from Siracusa, 58 kilometers from Trapani, which province it belongs to. The municipality has 30.272 inhabitants and its area is 20.707 hectares and its population density is of 146 inhabitants per square kilometers. Castelvetrano rises on a hilly area, 190 meters above the sea-level. Castelvetrano is a big agricultural center, oil and grapes cultivations are its specialties and it has an expanded wine industry and a traditional handicraft in working pieces of furniture. The town derives its name from Medieval Latin Castellum Veteranum. It rose in a place in which there were some pre-existent settlings down. Castelvetrano's hamlet dates back to the Arabian period. At first the feud spread between the XIII and XV centuries thanks to the Tagliavia, in 1564 it became a principality till the XVII century during which it reached its peack of growth and it became of the Pignatelli family.
Many churches are important from an artistic point of view, among them there are the Church of the SS. Trinita, a Norman building of the XII century; the Church of St. Domenico of the XV century and finally the Church of St.Giovanni Battista of the XVI century. Castelvetrano enjoys a very good reputation amongst worldwide travelers and hence is one of the most visited places in Italy.
