Castelfranco Veneto

Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.

Castelfranco Veneto is a town and episcopal see of Veneto, Italy, in the province of Treviso, 25 kilometers by rail from the town of Treviso. It is approximately 40 kilometers inland from Venice. The older part of the town is square, surrounded by medieval walls and towers constructed by the people of Treviso in 1211.

Castelfranco Veneto was the birthplace of the painter Giorgione, and the Cathedral contains one of his finest works, the Madonna with St. Francis and Liberalis, but more commonly called La Pala del Giorgione. In the background, the towers of the old town may be seen. The painting was being restored in Venice, Italy, however, ceremonies are planned for the return of 'La Pala' near the end of 2005. The Cathedral itself was designed by Francesco Maria Preti, over an ancient Romanesque church. Other artpieces include seven fragments of frescoes by Paolo Veronese.

Castelfranco Veneto enjoys a very good reputation amongst worldwide travelers and hence is one of the most visited places in Italy. Castelfranco Veneto can also be described as the best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times. This is evident from the archaeological sites found throughout Castelfranco Veneto.
