Casale Monferrato
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Inhabitants of Italy are referred to as Italians. Their official language is Standard Italian, descendant of Tuscan dialect and a direct descendant of Latin. The word Italy is derived from the Homeric Aeolic word which means bull. Today, despite regional variations in the form of accents and vowel emphasis, Italian is fully comprehensible to most throughout the country.
Casale Monferrato is a town in the Piedmont region of north-west Italy, part of the province of Alessandria. It is situated about 60 km east of Turin on the right bank of the Po, where the river runs at the foot of the Monferrato hills. Beyond the river lies the vast plain of the Po valley. Casale was an important center for Italian music in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Casale Monferrato is situated 116 metres above the sea level. Its total population is 36,339 with 86.32 square kilometre of total area. Casale occupies 421 per square kilometer of density.
Casale is situated in a plain where rice cultivation is predominant, and in an area of cement-bearing hills and wineries. Towards the end of the nineteenth century it became known as Cement Capital or capitale del cemento because of Portland cement in the hills nearby, and in the twentieth century it acquired printing press and refrigerator industries. Presently, Casale experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of Italy.
