Carpi
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Inhabitants of Italy are referred to as Italians. Their official language is Standard Italian, descendant of Tuscan dialect and a direct descendant of Latin. The word Italy is derived from the Homeric Aeolic word which means bull. Today, despite regional variations in the form of accents and vowel emphasis, Italian is fully comprehensible to most throughout the country.
Carpi is a town of 64.195 people in province of Modena in the region Emilia Romagna in northern Italy. Carpi is distinguished by its great square, the largest in the region. Notable landmarks include the Renaissance town hall, formerly the castle of the Pio family, lords of Carpi from 1319 to 1525, the cathedral, with a Baroque façade, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria in Castello, or La Sagra. The name Carpi is derived from carpinus betulus, a hornbeam tree particularly widespread in medieval times in the Po valley region. The foundation by the Lombard king Aistulf of Saint Mary's church in the castle in 752 was the first step in the settlement of the city. Carpi is 28 meters above the sea level with population density of 466 per square kilometer. Its area is 131 square kilometers.
Presently Carpi experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of Italy.
