Campobasso
Italy, officially the Italian Republic is a Southern European country. It comprises the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot, or due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Italy is called, Il Belpaese, Italian for beautiful country by its inhabitants, due to the beauty and variety of its landscapes and for having the world's largest artistic patrimony; the country is home to the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Rome is its Capital city and incidentally its largest city as well.
Campobasso is the capital city of the Molise region in Italy. It is located in the high basin of the Biferno River, surrounded by the Sannio and Matese mountains. Campobasso is renowned for the craftsmanship of blades, including scissors and knives, the production of pears and scamorza, a cheese. In 2004, at an elevation of 700 meters, a population of 51,633 lived within an area of 55 square kilometers.
The main attraction of Campobasso is the Castello Monforte. The castle has Guelph merlons and lies on a commanding point, where traces of Samnite walls have been found. Next to the castle is the 11th century Chiesa della Madonna del Monte or Santa Maria Maggiore, housing the precious wooden statue of the Incoronata. At the feet of the castle, the church of St. George is probably the most ancient church of Campobasso over the ruins of a Pagan temple.
Other attractions include the Cathedral, or Chiesa della Santissima Trinita, Church of the Holy Trinity, the church of San Bartolomeo, a Romanesque building from the 11th century, in limestone, the 14th century San Leonardo has a facade mixing Gothic and Romanesque elements, and a side mullioned window with vegetables decorations influenced by the Apulian architecture of the period and the Villa de Capoa, a garden with statues and a wide variety of vegetable species, including sequoias, Norwegian spruces, cypresses and Lebanese cedars
As it is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of Italy, it is one of the most visited places amongst the most die-hard travelers the world over.
