Benevento
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.
Benevento is a town and municipality of Campania, Italy. It is also the capital of the province of Benevento, 50 kilometers northeast of Naples. It is situated on a hill 130 meters above sea-level at the confluence of the Calore and Sabbato. It is also the seat of a Catholic archbishopric.
Benevento occupies the site of the ancient Beneventum, originally Maleventum or more correctly Maloeis. The Romans' theory that it meant the site of bad wind is no longer considered by historians today. Some older authors also proposed it could mean a place of crazy people, as in ancient times it was supposed that mad people had a sort of wind storm inside their head. In the imperial period it was supposed to have been founded by Diomedes after the Trojan War.
A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Benevento is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
