Barletta

Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.

Barletta is a city in Apulia, in south Italy. It is famous for the Colossus of Barletta, a bronze statue, probably representing Roman Emperor Theodosius II. Its coordinates are 41 degrees 19 minutes North 16 degrees 17 minutes East. It was the location of La Disfida di Barletta, a 1503 battle during which the Barlettans defeated the French. In the territory of Barletta there is an archeological site of Canne della Battaglia, where there was the famous battle between Romans and Carthaginians with the general Hannibal. The city has one gold medal for military valour and another one for the civil valour, for its resistance to the Nazi invasion during World War II. Some of the renowned celebrities there are painter Giuseppe De Nittis, Doctor Mariano Santo, and athlete Pietro Mennea.

A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Barletta is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
