Bagheria
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula.
Bagheria is a town in the Province of Palermo in Sicily, Italy. In 1658 Giuseppe Branciforti, Prince of Butera and a former Viceroy of Sicily retired in Bagheria and built a large villa there. In 1769 one of the Prince's descendants redesigned the former village into a well planned Baroque town, it immediately became a fashionable resort, and many villas in the popular Sicilian Baroque style were built.
Villa Palagonia, renowned for its complex external staircase, curved facades, and marble. Designed by Tomasso Napoli, and is today open to the public. Bagheria was the birthplace of two well-known 20th century artists, namely Renato Guttuso and Nino Garajo, and also of the film director Giuseppe Tornatore. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Bagheria is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
