Aosta
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Aosta is one of Italy’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments that the city has embraced. It is the principal city of the bilingual Aosta Valley in the Italian Alps located 110 kilometers to the northwest of Turin. It is situated near the Italian entrance of the Mont Blanc Tunnel, at the union of the Buthier and the Dora Baltea, and at the junction of the Great and Little Saint Bernard routes.
Aosta was known long before from the prehistoric times and later became a Celtic Ligurian city of the Salassi. The Roman Emperor Terentius conquered Aosta in 25th BC to establish the Roman colony of Augusta Praetoria. Later in 11th BC, it became the capital of the Alpes Graies which was the province of the Empire. In the tenth century, Aosta became part of the kingdom of Burgundy. However, later under the House of Savoy, Aosta was approved with a special status that it maintained when the new Italian Republic was established in 1948.
In spite of the intense urbanization that is undergoing Aosta, the city accounts with natural, few memorials that include the Arch of Augustus which was erected in 35th BC to celebrate the victory of the Roman troops led by consul Varro Murene over the local Salassi, the Porta Praetoria of first century AD with marble covering, the Roman theatre, the Cathedral of Aosta that was built in the 4th century annexed to the Roman Forum and many more.
Aosta, known as the town of best geographical environment, can trace its origins back to prehistoric times. This is evident from the archaeological sites city. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and pursue enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace.
