Anzio
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Anzio is one of Italy’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments that the city has embraced. It is a city and resort located on the coast of the Lazio region, about 33 miles south of Rome. Well known for its seaside harbor setting, Anzio is a fishing port popular with tourists and a departure point for ferries and hydroplanes to the Pontine Islands of Ponza, Palmarola and Ventotene. Anzio city bears great historical significance as the site of a crucial Allied landing during the Second World War. Anzio has been awarded of the Blue Flag for the quality of its beaches. It was called as Antium in ancient times and was the capital of the Volsci people until it was just far enough to be insulated from the riots and tumults of Rome. In the middle ages, Anzio was deserted in favour of Nettuno. Anzio along with Nettuno is also notable as site of an Allied forces landing and ensuing four-month battle during the Second World War. Anzio’s memorials are the hypotheses to decipher that include the Anzio beachead British military cemetery and a beachead museum. About eight kilometer north of the town there is a WWF, World Wildlife Fund Park with sulfureal springs and a medieval tower, Tor Caldara. In the southern part of the town, close to the border with Nettuno, are placed many Italian art nouveau style houses. Presently, Anzio experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of Italy. This fact has consolidated along with other adjacent municipalities, as a great alternative for residence.
