Albano Laziale
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Albano Laziale is a community in the province of Rome, on the Alban Hills, in Lazio. It is also a suburb of Rome, which is 25 kilometers distant. It is bounded by other communities of Rome, Rocca di Papa, Castel Gandolfo, Ardea and Ariccia. Alba Longa who is believed to have founded the city was one of the main cities of the Latins and, again according to the legend, the birthplace of Remus and Romulus, the mythological founders of Rome. In the third century emperor Septimius Severus had a military camp, called Castra Albana, built nearby to house a Roman legion of the central army reserve. Today's Albano developed from this settlements, as it is showed the main streets, which still follow the ancient decumanus and cardo. Remains of the large baths built by Septimius' son, Caracalla, are still visibile. In the middle ages the city was abandoned, regaining importance only in the 12th century for its strategic position across the Appian Way. It became custody of the Savelli family, who resided there until 1697 where it was thenceforth a Papal possession, the Popes maintaining today a villa in the communal territory. In the 18th century Albano became the summer residence of many Roman families, and the population increased to a large extent. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Albano Laziale is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
