Alba
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country comprising of the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it lo Stivale, the boot or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola, the Peninsula. Alba is town of Piedmont, Italy, in the province of Cuneo. It is considered the capital of the hilly area of Langhe, and is famous for the peach, white truffle and wine production. The confectionery group Ferrero is based in Alba as well. Its origins date before the Roman civilization, connected possibly to the presence of Celt and Ligurian tribe in the area. This city also won a Gold Medal for Military Valour for the heroic activity of its citizens as partisans, during World War II. The district of Alba Pompeia contains eighty towns in the civilian province of Cuneo and two in the province of Alexandria. The first bishop of Alba is Lampradius who was present at the synod held in Rome in 499 under Pope Symmachus. In the series of bishops, Benzo was famous as an adversary of Gregory VII and a partisan of the Empire in the struggle of the investitures. The district had in the early 20th century 101 parishes, 276 secular priests, 11 regulars, 403 churches and chapels along with 10 seminaries. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Alba is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
